Marketing Idea

Getting Pages Indexed in Google
by Esther Kane

Everybody wants their website to be in Google.  After all, it's used by almost 60% of Internet users!

Getting "indexed" in Google means that your website pages are listed in Google.

How can you tell?

1) Go to google.com,

2) Type in your website followed by .com, example: "domain.com", do not enter the www.,

3) If you find your website, click on "more pages from this site" and you'll see all the website pages from your website that Google has indexed.

4) Are there some missing?

5) To get your internal website pages indexed, you need to do the following...

a) Continuously change your website.  Add information, remove information, add pages, etc.

b) Any new pages you add to your site should be on your home page.  In other words, you should be able to click to new website pages directly from your home page.

Why?

Because the home page is the ONE page that Google visits every time it crawls through your website.  So if you make changes to the site, reflect it on your home page and Google will see that not only are you changing your site but you have also added new pages.

Marketing Tips

Focus Check — Focus on the “Buy”
by Grant Printing

Some marketing experts recommend that in creating a direct mail program, you should devote half your time to creating the reply form. Most clients are surprised, if not shocked, when they hear this very revealing rule. The rule is revealing because it suggests that most marketers spend too much effort on the sale and too little on the “buy.”

Think how often you have been virtually sold on something, but chose not to make the purchase because it was too hard to buy. The salesperson offered all sorts of options, for example, or made you worry about the value of extended warranty, or offered more complicated financing packages than you could not intelligently choose among. The product was too hard to buy. Now, think of your opposite experiences. Something appealed to you a little, not necessarily a lot and the ease with which you could order, pay for, and receive the product ultimately led you to make the purchase.

Good marketing must focus on the buy.

How clear is your offer?

Can the prospects sample the service, thereby reducing their risk?

How clear is the price?

How easy is it to buy?

Save your customers some hassle and make your product easy to buy.

Some more ideas from Grant Printing!

A Report From A Happiness Guru

Since we know that people who are happy live longer, are healthier and have the capacity to fully enjoy life, Dr. Ann Moliver Ruben, an 81-year-old psychologist, decided she had to do something about teaching people the importance of happiness.

So she fashioned herself into a HAPPINESS GURU and published a tiny book with tremendous ideas called The Memoirs of a Happy Psychologist.

People who read it learn that it is crucial to look at the bright side of life and demand that the doom and gloom side disappear immediately. They are encouraged to greet each day with thanks to God for giving them another day so they can bring joy into their lives and joy into the lives of others. They learn that money alone does not bring happiness. They appreciate the power they have to change negative attitudes into positive ones.

The HAPPINESS GURU reports rave reviews. One said, "Your book is a masterpiece." It can be yours for $10.00, plus $2.00 mailing charges, by contacting Women Are Wonderful.

Search Engine Optimization
The Importance of Linking
by Esther Kane

Search engines are really just machines. Think about it...

When someone goes to a search engine and types in "denver houses for sale", all a search engine can do is search for websites that have the words "denver houses for sale" in them.

Yes, of course, there are many other factors (100 factors!) but basically, this is how search engines work and it showcases the importance of using the right keyword phrases.

But, years ago, Google threw in another factor to help make truly relevant websites more important. They threw in a linking factor. So, how does this work?

Well, basically, Google looks at how many other websites link TO a website AND they look at the words used in that link.

Here's a classic example that everyone uses...

1) Go to Google and type in "miserable failure" (you don't have to use the quotes)
2) What's the number 1 website you see?
3) Now, you KNOW, without a doubt that those words are NOWHERE to be found on that website page!

So, how did that website get to be #1 for that keyword phrase?

There are SO MANY other websites with the words "miserable failure" hyperlinked to that website page that according to Google's rule, that page MUST be about a miserable failure.

This example shows the power of linking.

When it comes to Internet Marketing, you want other websites to link to you using the keyword phrases that you want to be found for. So, in addition to having the keyword phrase on your website page, you also want other websites to link to you using those same keyword phrases.

So, the next time you hesitate about creating a link exchange program on your website, stop and think about "miserable failure" and the power that is in linking!

Not Your Usual Marketing Tips

Not Your Usual Marketing Tips
Vol. 4, No. 7
July 4, 2006

Have you ever had VDP?

Don’t worry, it’s not some communicable disease. But what you might catch from it is the contagious notion that your business could see anywhere from twice the normal response to 10-15 times the response, depending on how far you go with it…

What am I talking about?

Welcome to the August edition of Not Your Usual Marketing Tips from JDK Marketing Communications Management.

VDP is “printer-speak” for Variable Data Printing. At some time or another, you’ve probably been the recipient of a postcard or pamphlet from a realtor or home improvement service, or similar company, that managed to address you by name. And not just where the address is customarily printed.

According to Wikapedia, the online source for just about anything, “Variable Data Printing…is a form of on-demand printing in which elements such as text, graphics and images may be changed from one printed piece to the next without stopping or slowing down the press, using information from a database or external file.

“For example, a set of personalized letters, each with the same basic layout, can be printed with a different name and address on each letter. Variable Data Printing is used mainly for direct marketing, customer relationship marketing and advertising.”

One printer in town, with whom I’ve done business, has sent out its own marketing direct marketing piece in which it “targeted” me by showing a graphic of a pizza. But not just any pizza. This one had the name “Joel” spelled out in slices of pepperoni!

The same folks sent out another piece inviting me to their plant…with a MapQuest graphic showing the route from MY HOME to their plant! Talk about “target” marketing!

As has been pointed out by these printers and the few others in town who have this kind of technology capability, it “increases revenue, response rates and customer retention.” According to another printer I noted online, the benefits of VDP were clearly measured: Percentage increases in response time was 33.9%, overall revenue/profit was 31.6%, repetitive orders/retention was 47.6%, average size order/value of order was 24.5% and response rates was 36.0%.

There are different levels of personalization. And it is pricier than conventional direct marketing. But regardless of the way a client might go with this, I don’t think I’m overstating the case by saying that with this kind of ROI, this is a 21st century marketing tool to be reckoned with.

As always, yours truly would be happy to explore this option with you in marketing your business or service.

And…as always…this column is “simulcast” on my colleague and friend Esther Kane’s “Affordable Search Engine Optimization” website, www.eckweb.com. How To Choose A Secure Web Hosting Provider
By Denise Schmeichler - August 1, 2006

As a web designer and developer, my goal is to provide the best hosting experience to my clients. Many website owners do not recognize the importance of choosing the right web hosting company, and it is my role to explain to them the importance of choosing a professional and secure web hosting provider.

I have always partnered with several secure web hosting companies. But recently I launched a new website, and because of the database program attached to that new website I had to choose a new hosting company that I was not familiar with. I admit that I did not do the standard research since it was recommended by a colleague.

I truly learned from my mistake!

Not only was my new website hacked into, but the hosting company simply dropped my website without notifying me of the incident! Their lack of security and unprofessionalism cost me income and advertising! Needless to say, it was an awful experience. I am grateful that it happened to me instead of to any of my clients!

This incident has forced me to remember the basic rules of choosing a web hosting provider.

What should you look for in a hosting company?

1. Security: website information and emails should be treated in secure manner.

2. Specialization: we work with hosting companies that specialize in web hosting.

3. Daily Backups

4. Technology savvy: they should be familiar with technologies you work with, and also adaptable to new technologies.

5. Customer support: you need to be able to communicate easily and fast without restrictions, and response time should not be more then a few hours. Customer service varies widely depending on the provider, and is in fact a major price differentiator.

6. Competitive: price also plays a very important role, since the majority of our clients do not see the value of many of the above.

7. Web Stats: Most hosting providers will give you online reports of basic statistics about your site

Once you find a good hosting company, stay with them! The only reasons you should move to another hosting provider are:

1. Poor customer support
2. Requirement of new technology, which the provider could not offer.
3. Price

I understand that like every other business decision you will be tied to a budget when choosing a secure web hosting provider, but do not let this cost requirement become you major goal! Please contact us today for more information about our web design services.

For Web Designers

Creating An Optimized Site From The Beginning
By Esther Kane - August 5, 2006

I give ALOT of consults to web designers every month! Of course, many of them are consulting AFTER the website has been completed. Although I've learned years ago that the majority of the Internet marketing I do will be for existing websites, I greatly prefer working with a designer from the beginning, before the actual site is created.

Why?

Well, it saves the client money because the designer doesn't have to go back and re-do the website. Whether the coding has to be re-created or whether the layout of the website has to be re-created, it's usually one or the other or both!

And because the client saves money that gives him much more to spend on advertising and getting his website into the top 10 of the search engines!

And when he is in the top 10 of the search engines and his business is growing he'll want to spend more on web design and Internet marketing!

Yes, I truly do love those very rare times that I get to work with a designer from the beginning of a website design!

So, how does the process work? I'll give you the steps...

1) Either a written or phone consultation with the client provides his goals/plans for the website and his business. This is important because we not only need to know what his business does, but the direction the business will be going in. We also need to know what the client's expectations are. If his expectations are too high, we need to give him a reality check on how the Internet can really help his business!

2) Keyword research, based on the consultation will also provide a realistic view of what keyword phrases need to be targeted in order to market the website. This not only gives the client an idea of what his target audience is searching for but it also helps the designer as far as what types of pages should be on the website and how they should flow from one to the other.

3) Creating a search engine friendly design is extremely helpful for website positioning. Many websites have poor designs that block search engine spiders at many points. This forces the website owner to spend more money on Internet marketing through PPC campaigns, paid directories and other paid avenues. It just doesn't make sense to create a website template that is difficult for the search engines when a similar template can be created with a more friendly design.

4) Creating and adding content throughout the website based on the keyword phrases being marketed is the next step. Make sure that the client is well aware from the very beginning that each website page being marketed MUST have content (at least 250 words) in order to compete for the chosen keyword phrase. The content brings the customers to the website, the graphics keep the customers at the website.

5) Anchor text links throughout the website. All web designers should automatically include a footer sitemap on every page using anchor text linking.

6) Proper coding. Of course, clean and proper coding on every website page also helps to get the pages validated and UP in the rankings of the search engines.

Just imagine, not only would you be providing web design services to your client, but you would also be earning income for the services of creating an optimized and marketable website. Your website would then be sent to an SEO firm for submissions, link exchange management programs and more!

But just think of how happy your clients will be when their websites begin providing them with additional income! They'll be coming back for more!
